Peace and Conflict Management Courses
The field is moving beyond conflict resolution toward the teaching and practice of conflict transformation and reconciliation, which includes healing past wounds and creating long-term, sustainable peace between antagonistic parties,” – Galtung. Peace studies began following World War II, with the creation of several research institutes, including the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo and the University of Michigan’s Centre for Research on Conflict Resolution in Ann Arbor. New research themes in peace studies, such as forgiveness, terrorism, and environmental security, are growing and expanding avenues for examination. Non profit organizations groups, which tend to attract many peace studies graduates, are increasingly playing a role in international peace-building efforts, and they require educated leaders. Students take extended internships in conflict zones to gain discourse, negotiation, and mediation skills, which is an important aspect of peace studies. Because peace studies are about rebuilding connections on all levels, these courses should include both theories with practice.
